Neighborhoods in San Antonio, Texas
Strong Hispanic cultural influences and an abundance of beautiful neighborhood parks make San Antonio a fascinating place to live. If you're moving here or relocating within the city, an understanding of what housing options are out there will go a long way.
Terrell Hills
An affluent San Antonio neighborhood located just northeast of downtown, Terrell Hills is close to the city while still having a quaint suburban atmosphere. Real-estate prices range from the high $200s to the low $800s and beyond. There are also apartments and condos in the area, some of which are available for purchase.
A private police department and a number of excellent schools make Terrell Hills safe and family-friendly. You'll also find public parks, fast food restaurants, grocery store chains and service stations. Terrell Hills is where you'll find homes dating to the 1920s sitting next to modern mansions.
Shavano Park
Coyotes have been spotted here, but Shavano Park is still one of the safest San Antonio neighborhoods, and is generally less expensive than Terrell Hills. It is an excellent neighborhood for families with teenagers interested in sports, as Tom C. Clark High Schoolis known for its athletics programs.
There are several real estate options here. Apartment complexes offer reasonably priced units from studios to four-bedroom houses. There are plenty of single-family housing communities within Shavano Hills, with home prices starting in the high $100s.
Dignowity Hill
Known for its annual Pushcart Derby, Dignowity Hill is an inexpensive neighborhood with a lot of personality. Real estate in this area is cheaper than in surrounding areas, with a median housing cost of just over $37,000.
Real estate in Dignowity Hill is extensive, with most single-family homes ranging from one to three bedrooms. Most of the houses in Dignowity Hill are recent, from the 1980s on, and you'll find a great deal of Spanish architecture. Apartments rent for $400 to $800 per month.
Castle Hills
Located within the San Antonio metro area, Castle Hills is a middle-class neighborhood and has been developing consistently since the early 1920s.
Single-family homes dominate, with lots of Spanish and Mediterranean architecture. Locally owned restaurants abound, with lots of family-friendly dining. Easy access to the 410 means you are never far away from shopping, nightlife and other amusements. However, apartments and other renting opportunities are scarce in this area.
Alta Vista
This midtown neighborhood falls somewhere between middle- and upper-class in terms of real estate. Large single-family homes, a few duplexes and several apartments communities make up the residential space, and there are almost as many renters here as homeowners.
The active and friendly neighborhood association helps maintain the upkeep of real estate and public land. The business district here is also beginning to flourish, providing job opportunities as well as recreation. You'll find that real estate is very diverse, with prices ranging from below $100,000 to more than $500,000.
